DMD is a neuromuscular disorder that causes muscles in the body to gradually decline and weaken. It is a disorder which only affects boys and usually starts at around the age of 7 years old. Over time those affected are unable to walk, speak or ultimately breathe, making this disorder fatal as the person approaches his twenties. There is presently no cure, or effective treatments, however research has come a long way is extending a person’s life expectancy. More than 50,000 Canadians are affected by neuromuscular disorders and there are more than 100 neuromuscular disorders covered under the umbrella of Muscular Dystrophy Canada.
Nathan Ride for Hope was created as a fundraiser to raise monies for Research into a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. Nathan is a 7 year old boy, who was diagnosed last Sept 2009, with DMD. On behalf of Nathan, his family members, and all families affected by DMD, we thank you for your valuable support, and pray that a Cure will soon be on the horizon for this deadly disorder.
I wish to also thank all the many sponsors, and volunteers who have come on board to assist us with this event, and we wish you all a pleasant and memorable ride through this Nations Capital Region.
Sincerely,
Ms. Nathalie Bercier
